According to the Health Effects Institute (HEI) research, particulate matter (PM) pollution was the third leading cause of death in 2017, with India having the highest rate. In India, air pollution was estimated to have caused approximately 1.1 million premature deaths in 2017 (HEI 2019), with 56 percent of those deaths linked to exposure to outdoor PM2.5 concentrations and 44 percent to domestic air pollution. According to WHO (2016), air pollution was responsible for one out of every nine deaths in 2012, with roughly three million deaths entirely attributable to outdoor air pollution.

According to WHO estimates from 2016, India is home to 10 of the world's 20 most populous cities. India was designated the fifth most polluting country by WHO (2019) based on PM2.5 emission concentrations, with 21 of the top 30 contaminated cities being in India. The WHO criterion was exceeded by an alarming 500 percent on average in Indian cities.

These statistics display a huge crisis of environmental and climate degradation which has already started causing after-effects like devastating cyclones, floods etc. We at SEPP World Foundation believe that if initiatives for environmental protection are not taken right now it would be too late. Hence, we have decided to build a proper roadmap regarding environmental protection so as to help the ecosystem and environment recover thereby preventing us from any devastating after-effects.
